About hypnotherapy

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy was developed by the American Psychologist Albert Ellis. He realised that people lose confidence and become stressed and anxious as a result of their thoughts. So if you change a person’s thoughts by suggestion, they improve their feelings and consequently their actions.

Hypnotherapy reinforces CBT as, under hypnosis, the therapist suggests positive thoughts that are individually tailored to the client.

There is a detailed explanation of hypnotherapy and of CBT on the NHS website

How will I feel when I am under hypnosis?

Hypnosis is a natural state of mind. It is not a trance and you will not be asleep. You will feel deeply and pleasantly relaxed, rather like a daydream. You will be able to accept positive suggestions but will be able to stop at any time that you wish and can reject anything that you do not like.

Will I be out of control at any time?

It is important to stress that you are in control and can stop at any time that you wish. You cannot be made to do anything that you do not want to do or accept any thoughts that you do not like.  You will be conscious and aware throughout and we will agree a treatment plan before we start.

Under hypnosis, you will be relaxed but always in control. The hypnotherapist is only your guide and will help you but never command you. You will find that you can make the changes that you want to make and you will keep control at all times.

Is it possible that I could become stuck in hypnosis?

No, because you will be in control throughout and can stop at any time you wish. The aim is to be in a state of comfortable relaxation just as you are when you fall asleep at night.  No one can be hypnotised against their will and no one can ever become stuck in hypnosis.
